A handy formula to use when finding roots is [-b±sqrt(b²-4ac)]/2a The first equation on your list would go into that formula as [-3±sqrt(3²-4*2*-2)]/2(2) This will give you two answers as you need to both subtract and minus the sqrt bit. Then make the answer in your calculator negative, so an answer of +2 on your calculator would be -2 on the graph, and -3 on you calculator would be +3 on the graph. Alternatively, for these questions which have nice roots, you can factorise them. 2x²+3x-2, set that equal to 0. Then you have 2x²+3x-2=0. This can now be factorised more easily. You need to find two values that when multiplied are equal to that equation. Start by putting your x values into the brackets. (2x )(x ) The equation has a minus sign before the 2 value so we know that the signs within the brackets are different. This means it could either be (2x+ )(x- ) or (2x- )(x+ ) We need two numbers that when multiplied are equal to -2, taking the 2x into account. This is where there s a bit of a jump as you need to be able to see the tricks within the question. (2*-0.5)(2) is equal to -2 so we can assume this fits in the equation. This leaves us with (2x-0.5)(x+2) This means that the roots (where y=0) are at coordinates (0.5,0) and (-2,0) You should be able to use this method or the formula for the rest of the questions. Solving for x we get x=113 Now throw that x back into your y equation (y=2x+17). So y = 2(113) +17 = 226 + 17 = 243 So we have 113 teddy bears, and 243 dogs.
