Creative writing can technically be considered any writing of original composition. In this sense, creative writing is a more contemporary and process-oriented name for what has been traditionally called literature , including the variety of its genres. In her work, Foundations of Creativity , Mary Lee Marksberry references Paul Witty and Lou LaBrant’s Teaching the People''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s Language to define creative writing. Marksberry notes:

Creative writing is considered by some academics (mostly in the USA) to be an extension of the English discipline, even though it is taught around the world in many languages. The English discipline is traditionally seen as the critical study of literary forms, not the creation of literary forms. Some academics see creative writing as a challenge to this tradition. In the UK and Australia, as well as increasingly in the USA and the rest of the world, creative writing is considered a discipline in its own right, not an offshoot of any other discipline.

WVU’s Fiction MFA is modeled on graduate-level university programs. A full-time student typically takes three courses per semester for 3 years (six 16-week semesters). WVU works differently; our courses vary in length according to the subject. For MFA students, courses are grouped by the semester. For example, eight 2-week courses equal a one-semester course. Likewise, two 4-week courses plus one 8-week course equal a one-semester course.

Each level of the degree includes a single year-long creative writing module taught by creative writing practitioners and active researchers. Each of these modules must be passed in order to progress to the next level and (in the case of the final module) for you to be awarded the degree.

This module introduces a wide range of works covering the major literary genres and embodying significant interventions or influences in the history of literature. The emphasis is on reading primary texts and discovering (or rediscovering) writers and cultures so that you will be able to make informed choices among more specialised modules later in your degree.

Likewise, two 4-week courses plus one 8-week course equal a one-semester course.

Creative Writing has been a vital part of the Vanderbilt English Department for nearly a century.  Now each year a small, select class of talented writers of fiction and poetry enroll in Vanderbilt’s two-year MFA Program in Creative Writing, and many undergraduates who major in English choose a special concentration in Creative Writing.  We invite you to join us as we continue to build upon the tradition of excellent writing at Vanderbilt.

Matt Baker, who received his MFA in 2012, has written about his expericence as a student in the program in “An Embarrassment of Riches,” published in Vanderbilt Magazine. Read his article here. Baker’s novel, If You Find This (Little Brown, 2015), was nominated for a 2016 Edgar Award and was named a Booklist Top Ten Debut [.]

The UNCW Department of Creative Writing is a community of deeply committed writers who believe that the creation of art is valuable to self and culture. We think you’ll find we are an open-minded and big-hearted group. Our faculty encourages a rigorous yet safe, supportive environment in which diverse writers can grow as artists and as individuals. We believe excellence starts with an informed application of craft and we encourage writers to explore aesthetics and methods across genre lines.

Well, a lot of universities offer a minor in creative writing. I suggest looking at the specific University s website and check if they offer a minor in CW. If it s not there try contacting the university. It s very possible to minor, although it will add more workload since minoring is an additional X units but if you really like CW I m sure you wouldn t find a problem.
